Eternity
Amid the relentless barrage of media scrutiny, the arrogance of some, and the hatred of others, our spiritual truths face continuous assault. Many align themselves with the scoffers, spreading falsehoods about the Good News of salvation. Yet, in the midst of this deception, the enduring truth remains. Our God-given curiosity is an unyielding force, driving us to seek understanding of eternity. In our quiet moments, we can hear a gentle whisper from within, declaring, "We are eternal beings!" What God breathed into us at creation is immortal because God Himself is the embodiment of immortality.
The Apostle Paul was granted a glimpse of heaven (2 Corinthians 12:1-4), where he ovserved wonders and heard truths beyond comprehension. Yet, he could share only a few insights about what awaits us. He illuminates the path through which we enter eternity:
"I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter." 2 Corinthians 12:2-4
“Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood can’t inherit God’s Kingdom; neither does the perishable inherit imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must become imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ ” 1 Corinth 15:51-54
Although we cannot physically grasp eternity while bound by our mortal flesh, our yearning to understand it remains strong until we experience it fully!
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11
We may have noticed that eternity is hinted at in the early verses of creation. According to the Book of Genesis, the universe was created in six days and completed on the seventh day. This final day was so significant that God sanctified and blessed it because He rested on that day.
“The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished. On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.” Genesis 2:1-3
Interestingly, even though the creation of the universe was finished on the seventh day, God continues to save, transform, and transition lives from this mortal world to the eternal kingdom. We might conclude that the 7th day could be eternal and present a new era where the purpose of creation reaches its splendid climax!
“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” Genesis 2:1-3 NKJV
